By far the most common issue we have seen in recent months is smaller employers not knowing when they need to start the auto enrolment process. If an employer misses their ‘staging date’ they won’t avoid an auto enrolment breach of the Regulations which could mean the employer faces a fine from the Regulator.
Recent research from The Pension Regulator showed ‘almost two thirds of small and micro employers still do not know the exact date they need to start complying with automatic enrolment laws’. (Click here for the press release).
This mirrors the experience other advisors are seeing in the sector. In the last few months alone, a fair few advisors have come forward with details of their employer-clients who had already passed their staging date without knowing it.
And yet checking when an employer is due to stage is one of the simplest and quickest things to do. And it doesn’t cost a penny.
